What stood out positively about this experience?
They do an extensive orientation and the staff are cool
What improvements are needed?
Better communication, especially when I’m the one who is waiting on a response. They answer quickly when I’m returning their calls but when I initiate the conversation I wait a long time for a response
What advice would you give future healthcare professionals considering this facility?
Come with a open mind, it’s a good place to work other then the inconveniences of trying to get responses to questions

What stood out positively about this experience?
I’ve been @ Rady for a couple of decades and have watched it change & grow both negatively & positively. My co workers for the most part, are very good, very skilled & we try & have fun w/ funny, decompressing conversations & atmosphere. That said, sometimes our community can be challenging w/ general favoritism & “cliques” making some newcomers feel unwelcome. Our mgmt is a work in progress. They seem to also take part in the favoritism and somewhat ignorance (or denial) of that favoritism. Finally, our not for profit hospital is behind the scenes, very for profit and often cut out pay incentives for the people “out in the field” like us and give themselves the bonuses. We are a RN & Tech Union hospital but sometimes feels as though Union is not as “for us” as proclaimed. All in all though, Rady is a good place to work as I’ve said, I’ve been there over 2 decades. The people, the patients and our combined high level skills is what sets it off. :)
What improvements are needed?
Better pay(but that’s the case w/ all healthcare). In surgery, in particular, I think higher pay or at least higher pay incentives when one chooses to work extra to “help out” as they are always needing, is what is needed most. Then better, more educated & empathetic leadership. Many of our leadership have no idea or less memory as to what it’s like to be in “the trenches” clinically doing the work to treat our patients. There’s too many “cooks in the kitchen” so to speak, directing & making rules, but w/ little ability & willingness to jump in and assist when we need. And then when we stay extra and help, they (leadership & hospital upper mgmt) want to takeaway or eliminate pay incentives. Not good or fair.
What advice would you give future healthcare professionals considering this facility?
Our patient population and procedures are very specialized and when coming to our facility, one needs to make & keep a concerted effort and openness to learn. Especially for travelers who come to help us w/ our staffing needs, they should have a healthy desire to learn as much as possible so they can be of best use.

Dr. Keller is an exceptional Surgeon, he pays attention to detail and he makes his decisions based off what he finds once we make incision. He is a patient teacher to his residents and fellows. I once watched as he gently uplifted a young resident who was upset because she felt she made a mistake it was so very refreshing to see how he handled her in that situation. Dr. Keller is also an exceptional teammate. He never fails to let me know what we're doing and what he will need during the procedure. I can't tell you how important that communication is to relieving the stress of surgery and to gaining great surgical outcomes.
